Brent Reynolds are pleased to announce the launch of the newly designed website for their practice, New Life Chiropractic (www.newlifechiropractic.com). The husband and wife team, both board-certified Chiropractic Neurologists, offer a unique expanded approach to healthcare for the entire family. Using brain-based chiropractic and nutritional therapies that are non-invasive, non-surgical, and non-pharmacological, the doctors address a wide range of neurological disorders and health conditions.

Dr. Chiappino, a Defeat Autism Now! (DAN) practitioner, specializing in the care of special needs children, pregnancy, and nutrition, redesigned the website with parents in mind. “We often find that parents of special needs children are not fully informed about natural therapies currently available. Our goal with the new site is to provide resources, tools and up-to-the minute information on holistic therapies that offer children an alternative to a lifetime dependency on prescription medications, which often have serious side effects. The site features an interactive quiz for parents who have concerns about their child’s development, the tell-tale signals of attention disorders, as well as information on diet and nutrition. To celebrate the launch of the site, we are offering a free 15 minute phone consultation with any parent who completes the online quiz to discuss their concerns.”

Commenting on the redesigned site, Dr. Reynolds, a specialist in chronic inflammation, vertigo, traumatic brain injury, and nutrition, adds, “With our new website, our aim is to help patients with vestibular disorders, chronic pain and other health issues better understand the neurological basis for their condition and how Chiropractic Neurology can help them regain their health without drugs or invasive procedures. The new site clearly outlines the scope of our services and offers a better understanding of how our therapies have helped in real life situations through testimonials offered by those whom we have treated.”

The doctors’ blog, Holistic Nutrition and Neurology (http://holisticnutrition andneurology.blogspot.com), featuring articles covering the gamut of health concerns, is also accessible from the site. According to Dr. Reynolds, “The blog is updated on a regular basis so that visitors can become more educated on natural health care alternatives like Chiropractic Neurology. We hope our followers will take away valuable information from the blog and our new website that provides a fresh perspective on natural healing, allowing them to take an active role in developing and maintaining their wellness lifestyle.”

About New Life Chiropractic

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds offer a unique, expanded approach to wellness that combines the best of neurological science with nutrition and traditional chiropractic, helping their patients achieve balance in their brains, their bodies, and their lives.

The doctors have distinguished themselves as two of 600 doctors worldwide achieving Diplomatic status on the American Chiropractic Neurological Board (ACNB), with over 900 hours in Chiropractic Neurological coursework. Making new connections between nerve cells here, disconnecting certain nerve cells there. Our environment, including our relationships with others, games we play (crossword puzzles, Suduko, poker), TV shows, movies, video games, books we read, exercises we perform, treatments we receive (chiropractic/massage) and the thoughts that bubble up inside our heads throughout the day actually physically change the structure of our brains by rewiring connections between nerve cells. The term coined to describe this change our brain undergoes as a result of our world experiences is called plasticity.

One analogy that’s often used to visualize brain plasticity is a footpath in the grass. If you started walking on the grass through your yard in the same path every day for a year, you would eventually wear out a pathway that would be there for a long time. The key is that the pathway is used consistently. In The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science, Norman Doidge describes how the brain can be rewired and strengthened much like a muscle.

This is what our brains do, even with the thoughts we think: it creates new pathways. It used to be a common notion that our thought life is as a result of our brains, but scientific evidence has shown otherwise. The advents of functional MRI and PET scans that can record areas of the brain that light up demonstrate that our thoughts can send blood and activity to certain areas of the brain.

So how does one change a thought? It’s very simple. Just by being aware of your thoughts, or practicing mindfulness, you’re altering how the brain functions. If you’re having fear thoughts, stopping and saying to yourself “why am I having these thoughts?” is using a different part of the brain. In the book The Mind and The Brain: Neuroplasticity and the Power of Mental Force by Jeffrey Schwartz, the author describes how people suffering with debilitating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can change the pathways in their brains that activate the disorder by being aware of their thinking and learning how to redirect their thinking to something besides the obsession that has a hold of them. MRI and other brain scans showed that the pathways were altered, that the brain rewired. In most of the cases, just being aware of the brain going on a loop (experienced with massive anxiety) that tells them that they should wash their hands, count tiles, check all the locks in the house, etc. was altered because a different part of the brain was used to contemplate contemplation. Sounds weird, but it works if it’s performed consistently.

If you started today and monitored your thoughts everyday for a year, you would profoundly change your brain. The first thing to do is to be aware of your thoughts. Sort of like thinking of your thoughts in the third person, much like many celebrities and professional athletes describe themselves in the press. “John is thinking negatively about Sue.” If your thoughts are predominately negative, hateful, or fearful/worried, you reinforce the pathways in your brain that maintain these thoughts. We all know by now the deleterious effects of these thoughts. They’re often described as stress. If you think pleasant, loving, positive thoughts, those pathways become more efficient.

Another strategy is to be present. Presence means to be focused on whatever you’re doing in the moment and not think about the past or the future. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a great book on how to do this. Not to say that you never make plans, but try not to worry about those plans and how it’s going to work out. For example: “Joan is worrying about the upcoming conference.” Just focus on what’s in front of you. This strategy uses the frontal lobe of the brain. The frontal lobe has powerful inhibitory effects on our fear centers of our brains. Research has shown that a positive attitude can improve our overall health.

Another very powerful frontal lobe thought activity is compassion. Compassion and understanding lights up our frontal lobes very powerfully and is good for our communities. Imagine the world if there was even just a little more compassion. If the brain controls every function in the body then the entire body can benefit. What kind of brain do you want? You can start a new footpath right now. “______ is starting a new thought process right now.”

~ Dr. W. Therapeutic massage has far reaching benefits, from bolstering sleep, mood and the immune system, to improving serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain. Studies show that:

Massage therapy, specifically back massage, promotes social and psychological behavior as well as bolsters the immune system: “Massage therapy promotes psychosocial relaxation, reduces stress and has been reported to improve the immune function. As such, massage therapy is currently used in palliative care for the relief of anxiety and pain.” ~J. Anesth. 2010 Dec;24(6):955-8. This is beneficial to overall health as high and prolonged levels of cortisol have been shown to have negative health effects, including thyroid dysfunction, and higher blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels.

In studies in which serotonin and dopamine, the activating neurotransmitters responsible for emotional control, were assayed in urine, an average increase of 28% and 31% was noted respectively. “These studies combined suggest the stress-alleviating effects (decreased cortisol) and the activating effects (increased serotonin and dopamine) of massage therapy on a variety of medical conditions and stressful experiences.” Int J Neurosci. 2005 Oct;115(10):1397-413.

Massage therapy can make you happier: The frontal lobes are where we experience happy, empathetic, joyous, and compassionate emotions. They help to regulate or gate the emotional, aggressive parts of our limbic system or “emotional brain.”

According to a 2002 study by the Touch Research Institute, “The increasing incidence of violence among children and adolescents highlights the importance of identifying at-risk profiles as well as assessing interventions for preventing violence. Empirical research has suggested behavioral, central nervous system, and neurotransmitter/neurohormone dysregulation in violent individuals, including (1) an underaroused central nervous system characterized by right frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) hypoactivation, and (2) a neurotransmitter/neurohormone profile of lower norepinephrine, serotonin, and cortisol, and elevated dopamine and testosterone. The literature also suggests a disproportionate incidence of physical abuse and neglect or the lack of positive physical contact in violent individuals.”

“In the studies we have conducted to date, there has been a relatively high incidence of anger and aggression in high school samples, even those that were relatively advantaged, as well as high levels of depression (one standard deviation above the mean), suggesting significant disturbance in these youth. Adolescents with these profiles also had less optimal relationships with their families, used illicit drugs more frequently, had inferior academic performance, and had higher depression scores. In our cross-cultural comparisons, preschoolers and adolescents were less physically affectionate and more aggressive in the United States versus France. Further, the U.S. youth received less physical affection as preschoolers, and as adolescents they engaged in more self-stimulating behaviors, perhaps to compensate for receiving less physical affection from their parents and peers. This supports the notion that less physical affection (or more physical neglect) can contribute to greater aggression.”

“Massage therapy has been effective with violent adolescents, perhaps because the physical stimulation reduced their dopamine levels and increased their serotonin levels. Their aggressive behavior decreased and their empathetic behavior increased. These preliminary data need to be replicated in a larger sample with a more comprehensive set of measures in the context of identifying a diagnostic profile.” Adolescence. 2002 Winter;37(148):735-49.

Massage is a wonderful therapeutic modality that should no longer be viewed as an indulgence, but essential for proper brain function and overall wellness. Fuel for the brain is oxygen and glucose, more commonly known as your blood sugar. The brain can’t store glucose for a rainy day; it needs a steady supply and will break down other tissues to get it if it’s not available at the moment. This makes sense for survival because life cannot be sustained without proper brain function. Your quality of life can suffer also without proper brain function. Activation is the “use it or lose it” concept that we hear about often like exercise, meditation, chiropractic adjustments and brain activities such as learning a new language.

When we look at fasting blood glucose (blood sugar levels) in a patient’s blood chemistry, we’re looking at a window into their brain function. Normal functional ranges for blood glucose are anywhere from (85-100 mg/dL) in the fasting adult. If the fasting glucose levels are lower than this, a person can be considered hypoglycemic. Hypoglycemia can cause symptoms of fatigue, irritability, confusion, and headaches. In essence, the brain begins to suffer.

The cause of hypoglycemia can be several factors. One factor can be too much insulin is being released. Insulin is a protein that is released by the pancreas. It stimulates the uptake of glucose into the cells which is eventually converted into the energy needed to power the brain and thereby the rest of the body. Some people suffer with hypoglycemia as a result of too much insulin being released due to poor dietary choices. A diet high in sugar is one of the most common causes of hypoglycemia. Other factors for hypoglycemia include nutritional deficiencies and hormonal problems, just to name a few.

Hypoglycemics usually have a burst of energy after eating and then “crash” hours later. The insulin is dumped out in a large amount, absorbs the glucose, leaving the blood levels of glucose depleted. The brain then alters its output to save energy -- the equivalent to your car running out of gas. The symptoms one may experience are the same ones mentioned above. Chronic, long-term hypoglycemia can have serious consequences for the brain and can even lead to brain degeneration.

If hypoglycemia is not corrected, it can lead to a condition known as insulin resistance. This is when the pancreas no longer effectively produces insulin and the blood sugar becomes elevated. The fasting blood glucose will creep up towards the 100 mg/dL level. This can cause a whole host of problems for the brain such as inflammation, fatigue and alterations in hormone levels. It can also lead to cardiovascular problems, small blood vessel changes in the brain, and ultimately brain degeneration. The end result of insulin resistance if not corrected is Type II Diabetes. Once Diabetes sets in, it can be very difficult to correct. Diabetes can lead to stroke, depression, and recent evidence suggests that diabetics are at an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. (1)

A very important blood marker for insulin resistance is Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). HbA1c is a chemical component in the blood that reveals the blood glucose levels over a long period of time, not just as a result of the last meal. HbA1c is a useful indicator of how well the blood glucose level has been controlled in the recent past (6-8 weeks). Normal ranges should be around 4-6%. When HbA1c begins creeping up around 6, it indicates possible insulin resistance.

Blood sugar is of utmost importance to your brain’s performance. Whenever we attend a patient with a chronic health issue, especially chronic neurological issues, whether it be traumatic brain injury, Autism, Vertigo, chronic pain, etc., the first thing we want to look at is the fasting blood glucose. These levels give us a picture of the functioning of the entire brain. It is equivalent to a mechanic checking the oil levels in your car -- it’s the first thing they do to determine how the engine is performing. Often times, the blood sugar level (either too high or too low) is the cause of many common, chronic problems that people present with to healthcare professionals. In many cases, simply stabilizing a patient’s blood sugar through dietary changes and supplementation can eradicate many chronic symptoms and prevent future diseases and healthcare costs down the road.

-- Dr. Brent Reynolds

(1)Cerebral complications of diabetes mellitus. The symptoms are due to a dysfunction of the vestibular system in the inner ear. It is often associated with nausea and vomiting as well as difficulties standing or walking. (source: Wikipedia)

There are several types of vertigo. One type is caused by debris in the canals of the inner ear and made worse by movement of the head (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). Other causes include inflammation of the vestibular nerve (vestibular neuritis) and dysfunction of the joints in the neck (cervicogenic vertigo). There are still many other causes not mentioned here.

It’s important to rule out whether a disease is causing the symptoms. MRIs, CAT scans and other diagnostic tests are helpful in ruling out brain tumors and other diseases which can cause the symptoms.

What if the MRIs and other tests are unremarkable but you still have symptoms? This is a very common complaint. No concrete disease can be found, but the symptoms still persist. Unfortunately, in cases like these patients can get stuck on a merry-go-round of medications to mask the symptoms and travel from doctor to doctor only to be told “it’s psychological" or "you have too much stress in your life.”

Here’s what you should do if you have symptoms of vertigo and a disease process such as tumor, infection, etc. has been ruled out: Go to a health professional who specializes in this disorder and who is trained in assessing the function of the vestibular system and brain. A board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist can help you address and manage your vertigo, dizziness, or balance loss without the need for medication. Visit www.acnb.org to locate a Chiropractic Neurologist near you.

A professional trained in analyzing the function of the vestibular system can run a series of tests to evaluate how the system is working. For example, an ENG test can determine whether or not inner ear disease is the true cause of the patient's dizziness.

One of the most common causes of vertigo is something mentioned earlier called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV. In BPPV, a simple functional test can be performed called the Dix Hallpike test. If this test is positive, a procedure called the Epley maneuver can be performed which in many cases, can be very successful in correcting the cause of the vertigo. To learn more, check out the Vestibular Disorders Association.

Vertigo is a terrible disorder that can be treated. Devoting a few minutes to exercise prepares your body for the vigors of shoveling and helps avoid any muscle pulls.

• Reduce your risk of developing hypothermia, a dangerous condition where body temperature drops. Dress warmly. Layers are best.

• To maximize your footing and help minimize the risk of a fall, wear sturdy boots/shoes with good tread. If possible, try sprinkling some sand underfoot to provide some extra traction.

• Use a lightweight, ergonomically-designed, non-stick shovel.

• Plan to shovel when the snow is fresh and light -- clear your walkway before it becomes compacted.

• If the snow is deep, be sure to clear layer by layer.

• Shovel the snow closest to you; overstretching to lift can strain your lower back.

• Start slowly and pace yourself to avoid placing a sudden stress on your heart. Cold air makes it harder to breathe and work, placing more demand on your body.

• When shoveling, try to push the snow to the side, rather than lifting. Stand with your feet apart at hip width to maintain proper balance.

• If you must dig and toss the snow, lift with your legs, keeping your back straight; tighten your stomach muscle to avoid straining your back.

• Avoid twisting your body; rotate your entire body to face the direction you are throwing in.

• Make sure to keep hydrated. Avoid caffeinated drinks.

• Pace yourself and know when to call it quits. If you're feeling pain or exhaustion, take a break.

• Avoid shoveling altogether if you are elderly, a heavy smoker, have a heart condition, a history of back problems, or lead a sedentary lifestyle. Enlist the help of family members or kind neighbors.

Even the best laid plans go astray. Injuries sometimes do occur, despite the best intentions to shovel properly. Lower back strain, muscle spasms, disc damage, and even spinal fractures are frequently experienced after shoveling.

If you experience pain, seek help immediately. A few simple and practical lifestyle changes can make a positive impact on your health and can also prevent you from experiencing a painful injury in the year ahead, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).

We, along with the ACA, urge you to adopt the following New Year’s resolutions for a healthier you:

1. I will limit my intake of caffeinated coffee, sodas and teas. The caffeine in these drinks can cause dehydration and can rob the body of essential nutrients. Stick to water, natural juices and other decaffeinated beverages.

2. I will avoid over medicating myself and my family. Many over‐the‐ counter and prescription medications have unknown side effects. Discuss alternative remedies with a doctor of chiropractic.

3. I will not carry a heavy purse or briefcase with its strap over my shoulder, unless I place the strap over my head on the side opposite the bag. Wearing a shoulder strap over one shoulder unevenly places the weight of the bag on one side of the body, potentially causing shoulder and back pain.

4. I will not allow my children to carry backpacks that weigh more than 10 percent of their body weight. Beyond that weight, the backpack can cause the wearer to bend forward in an attempt to support the weight on his or her back, instead of the shoulders.

5. I will not lift heavy objects over my head. These types of movements can strain muscles and affect nerves, causing severe neck, shoulder and arm problems.

6. I will not turn my torso while lifting relatively heavy objects. This rotates the spine and can bring on a "back attack."

7. I will avoid the habit of consistently crossing the same knee over the other. Such a habit can also eventually cause misalignment of the spine.

8. I will try to keep moving while I`m at work. If sedentary for the majority of the work day, it is very important to take periodic stretch breaks. Get up from the desk and take a brief walk, and stretch arms and legs as frequently as possible to avoid postural and spinal stress.

9. I will, when using a shovel, in winter or summer, remember to push rather than lift, whenever possible.

10. I will use luggage with wheels whenever possible. Carrying, lifting and moving a heavy suitcase can ruin a vacation.

Happy New Year from all of us at New Life Chiropractic!

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Don’t let small family dramas get you upset. Stress and anger cause inflammation.

Limit your intake of sugar today -- too much can cause inflammation and joint pain.

Try to eat as many raw, green leafy vegetables as possible.

Include plenty of fiber rich foods such as sweet potatoes, green beans, or brussel sprouts.

Eat a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits which provide plenty of antioxidants.

If you choose to drink alcohol with your Thanksgiving meal, red wine is preferential. Moderation is key of course!

Never eat anything with Trans Fats! Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic conditions have been associated with trans fat consumption. They are found in prepackaged pie crusts, ready-to-bake biscuits & cakes, etc.

Get outside! Go for a nice brisk walk if you can or do some other physical activity.

Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Autism now affects 1 in 110 children; The Center For Disease Control (CDC) figures show that 4.6 million children had a learning disorder in 2007 and 4.5 million children were diagnosed with attention defict hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that same year. CDC also reports that 56% of children with ADHD were on prescription medication (2003.)

Early diagnosis and intervention are key to developing a child's full potential.

Please join me tomorrow, Tuesday, November 9, 7:00 pm at Wild by Nature in E. Setauket for my lecture on holistic therapies for pediatric neurological disorders such as ADHD, Autism and learning disorders. Learn how natural therapies address the source of your child's symptoms, without the need for medication or surgery. Discover how diet, nutritional supplements, and physical and cognitive exercises can help improve connections in your child's brain.

Attendees will gain a better understanding of the neurological mechanism behind behaviors such as impulsivity and inattention in children diagnosed with ADHD or learning disabilities, or spinning, swaying and stimming behaviors in children with Autism. I'll cover the importance of diet, specifically how the gluten-free/casein free diet can make significant improvements in such areas as speech, bowel habits, language, behavior and sensory issues for children with neurological disorders. In addition, I'll provide helpful tips on how to adopt a gluten-free lifestyle and how to keep your child's diet on track during the upcoming holiday season.

For directions contact Wild By Nature; 631 246 5500.

Hope to see you tomorrow night!

Yours in Health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino
Board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist
Defeat Autism Now! We learn to hold our heads up, crawl and then eventually walk, often precariously at first. We fall a lot initially and then progress towards running, playing, jumping, swinging and other activities that help our brains to develop balance. This is why we adults have fond childhood memories of walking across logs or balance beams, spinning, swinging and balance activities that help to stimulate our vestibular system (balance centers of the brain).

I can’t stress enough how important it is for children to stimulate their brain’s balance centers on a regular basis. Having a good brain is more than academic performance. Developing a good balance center reduces the likelihood of developing vestibular problems later in life including balance problems, learning disabilities, vertigo, dizziness, lack of coordination and injuries.

Children’s brains are nurtured by physical movement; this is why gentle rocking is calming to infants. A child’s vestibular system is properly formed by the feedback it receives from running, swinging, jumping, muscle contraction, etc.

Children should not be sedentary, staring at an LCD screen for hours at a time. If TV and video game activities are performed more than standard physical activities it can reduce the normal vestibular development needed to maneuver in Earth’s gravitational field throughout life.

The brain and vestibular system receive input from changes in muscle tone, movements of the body, head and eyes. Serious developmental and coordinative problems can develop if these centers are not regularly activated. It’s important for children to develop proprioception -- the sense that indicates whether the body is moving with required effort, as well as where the various parts of the body are located in relation to each other. Often called the “sixth sense” proprioception is vital to good balance.

Modalities such as Chiropractic, Massage Therapy, Acupuncture, Craniosacral Therapy, Yoga, and other body-centered therapies can help to improve proprioception and balance. Nothing, however, can solely replace good old fashioned movement and physical activity. Balance and prevention of balance related problems, along with coordination are learned activities developed by our interaction with our environment.

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. You find out that there are lots of gluten-free alternatives out there like gluten-free bread, pasta, cookies, cakes, chips, pizza, etc. You can find almost anything without gluten that you find with gluten. Yippee! The problem is that these gluten-free foods are not necessarily healthy.

Switching to a diet filled with gluten-free pasta, cookies, chips, etc. is not the best way to eat on a regular basis. Gluten-free pizza is still pizza! These foods can raise blood sugar and insulin very quickly. Gluten-free breads made with rice or corn flour often lack the fiber that breads with gluten contain. Fiber helps to slow the insulin response and keep the blood sugar from quickly spiking. Some people gain a tremendous amount of weight when switching to gluten-free foods because they’re eating a lot of high glycemic (raises blood sugar quickly)/low fiber foods which can increase body fat very fast. This is extremely dangerous for those who tend to be hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) or insulin resistant (high blood sugar/pre-diabetic state). You can become insulin resistant and shift towards Type II Diabetes. Not good.

It’s best to remember that a diet comprised of pasta, bread, and cookies is obviously not a wise, healthy choice whether you’re gluten free or not. Stick with fruits, vegetables, lean meats, nuts, legumes and brown rice. The amount of food choices still available to you is huge. It’s ok to have an occasional gluten-free pasta, pizza, cookie, etc. If possible, try to find gluten-free breads with high fiber content.

Remember, comfort food is comfort food is comfort food.

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. TV exposure and video gaming for the middle childhood group was reported by parents and children, and attention issues were reported by teachers. College students provided self-reports of TV viewing, video game play, and perceived attention problems. The ISU researchers found that children who exceeded the two hours per day of screen time recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics were 1.5 to 2 times more likely to be above average in attention problems; college students showed a similar association, suggesting that TV exposure or video gaming may have lasting consequences.

According to Swing, "It is still not clear why screen media may increase attention problems, but many researchers speculate that it may be due to rapid-pacing, or the natural attention grabbing aspects that television and video games use."

Gentile reports that the pace of television programming has been quickened by "the MTV effect."

"When MTV came on, it started showing music videos that had very quick edits -- cuts once every second or two," Gentile said. "Consequently, the pacing of other television and films sped up too, with much quicker edits."

He says that quicker pace may have some brain-changing effects when it comes to attention span.

"Brain science demonstrates that the brain becomes what the brain does," Gentile said. "If we train the brain to require constant stimulation and constant flickering lights, changes in sound and camera angle, or immediate feedback, such as video games can provide, then when the child lands in the classroom where the teacher doesn't have a million-dollar-per-episode budget, it may be hard to get children to sustain their attention."

The study showed that the effect was similar in magnitude between video games and TV viewing.

TV, video games may contribute to ADHD
Based on the study's findings, Swing and Gentile conclude that TV and video game viewing may be one contributing factor for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children.

"ADHD is a medical condition, but it's a brain condition," Gentile said. "We know that the brain adapts and changes based on the environmental stimuli to which it is exposed repeatedly. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to believe that environmental stimuli can increase the risk for a medical condition like ADHD in the same way that environmental stimuli, like cigarettes, can increase the risk for cancer."

"Although we did not specifically study the medical condition of ADHD in these studies, we did focus on the kinds of attention problems that are experienced by students with ADHD," added Swing. "We were surprised, for example, that attention problems in the classroom would increase in just one year for those children with the highest screen time." Now the agency responsible for making sure pharmaceutical products do not hurt people is proposing a Rule Change to give one staff employee the sole authority to allow "exceptions or alternatives" when drug companies want to change vaccine ingredients, such as preservatives (like thimerosal) or adjuvants (like aluminum) or the amount of residual protein and antibiotics in vaccines.

June 28 Deadline for Public Comment

The FDA's proposed change to Requirements for Constituent Materials was quietly published in The Federal Register on March 30 and the deadline for public comment is only days away - on Monday, June 28.

The FDA is arguing that the rule change is necessary to "reduce burdens on industry" and to provide "greater flexibility and reduced regulatory requirements." It gives one FDA staff Director the power to give drug companies the green light to "employ advances in science and technology as they become available" when companies want to make new vaccines really fast and get more bang for the buck.

Will There Be ANY Checks & Balances?

If the proposed Rule Change is put into effect, a vaccine manufacturer could request a change in the content or amount of vaccine ingredients by simply writing a "brief statement describing the basis for the request and supporting data" as part of the original license application or for a pending or approved application. There is no information about how much scientific evidence the drug companies will have to submit to prove the new ingredients are safe; or whether the FDA's Vaccine Advisory Committee will be able to review that evidence; or whether the American public will have a chance to comment before vaccine ingredients are changed.

This does not look like the transparency, public participation and collaboration in government that President Obama said he supports. It removes the checks and balances necessary for good government.

Could Warehoused Squalene Be Quickly Approved?

Last year when federal health officials declared a pandemic H1N1 "swine flu" national emergency, drug companies put a full court press on the FDA to fast track licensure of highly reactive oil based squalene adjuvants and the use of new technology, like insect cells, to make pandemic influenza vaccines. During meetings of the FDA's Vaccine Advisory Committee, the National Vaccine Information Center opposed both the quick licensure of squalene adjuvants, which hyperstimulate the immune system and have been associated with autoimmunity, and the use of insect cells, which could be contaminated with insect viruses.

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Children with above-average levels of one common byproduct had roughly twice the odds of getting a diagnosis of ADHD, according to the study, which appears in the journal Pediatrics.

Exposure to the pesticides, known as organophosphates, has been linked to behavioral and cognitive problems in children in the past, but previous studies have focused on communities of farm workers and other high-risk populations. This study is the first to examine the effects of exposure in the population at large.

Organophosphates are "designed" to have toxic effects on the nervous system, says the lead author of the study, Maryse Bouchard, Ph.D., a researcher in the department of environmental and occupational health at the University of Montreal. "That's how they kill pests."

The pesticides act on a set of brain chemicals closely related to those involved in ADHD, Bouchard explains, "so it seems plausible that exposure to organophosphates could be associated with ADHD-like symptoms."

Environmental Protection Agency regulations have eliminated most residential uses for the pesticides (including lawn care and termite extermination), so the largest source of exposure for children is believed to be food, especially commercially grown produce. Adults are exposed to the pesticides as well, but young children appear to be especially sensitive to them, the researchers say.

Detectable levels of pesticides are present in a large number of fruits and vegetables sold in the U.S., according to a 2008 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited in the study. In a representative sample of produce tested by the agency, 28 percent of frozen blueberries, 20 percent of celery, and 25 percent of strawberries contained traces of one type of organophosphate. Other types of organophosphates were found in 27 percent of green beans, 17 percent of peaches, and 8 percent of broccoli.

Although kids should not stop eating fruits and vegetables, buying organic or local produce whenever possible is a good idea, says Bouchard.

"Organic fruits and vegetables contain much less pesticides, so I would certainly advise getting those for children," she says. "National surveys have also shown that fruits and vegetables from farmers' markets contain less pesticides even if they're not organic. If you can buy local and from farmers' markets, that's a good way to go."

A direct cause-and-effect link between pesticides and ADHD "is really hard to establish," says Dana Boyd Barr, Ph.D., a professor of environmental and occupational health at Emory University. However, she says, "There appears to be some relation between organophosphate pesticide exposure and the development of ADHD."

This is the largest study of its kind to date, according to Barr, who researched pesticides for more than 20 years in her previous job with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention but was not involved in the study. Bouchard and her colleagues analyzed urine samples from children ages 8 to 15. The samples were collected during an annual, nationwide survey conducted by the CDC, known as the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The researchers tested the samples for six chemical byproducts (known as metabolites) that result when the body breaks down more than 28 different pesticides. Nearly 95 percent of the children had at least one byproduct detected in their urine.

Just over 10 percent of the children in the study were diagnosed with ADHD. The kids were judged to have ADHD if their symptoms (as reported by parents) met established criteria for the disorder, or if they had taken ADHD medication regularly in the previous year.

One group of pesticide byproducts was associated with a substantially increased risk of ADHD. Compared with kids who had the lowest levels, the kids whose levels were 10 times higher were 55 percent more likely to have ADHD. (Another group of byproducts did not appear to be linked to the disorder.)

In addition, children with higher-than-average levels of the most commonly detected byproduct -- found in roughly 6 in 10 kids -- were nearly twice as likely to have ADHD.

"It's not a small effect," says Bouchard. "This is 100 percent more risk."

To isolate the effect of the pesticide exposure on ADHD symptoms, the researchers controlled for a variety of health and demographic factors that could have skewed the results.

Still, the study had some limitations and is not definitive, Bouchard says. Most notably, she and her colleagues measured only one urine sample for each child, and therefore weren't able to track whether the levels of pesticide byproducts were constant, or whether the association between exposure and ADHD changed over time.

Long-term studies including multiple urine samples from the same children are needed, Bouchard says. She suspects such studies would show an even stronger link between pesticide byproducts and ADHD.

EPA spokesman Dale Kemery said in a statement that the agency routinely reviews the safety of all pesticides, including organophosphates. "We are currently developing a framework to incorporate data from studies similar to this one into our risk assessment," Kemery said. "We will look at this study and use the framework to decide how it fits into our overall risk assessment."

Kemery recommended that parents try other pest-control tactics before resorting to pesticide use in the home or garden. Washing and peeling fruits and vegetables and eating "a varied diet" will also help reduce potential exposure to pesticides, he said.

"I would hope that this study raises awareness as to the risk associated with pesticide exposure," Bouchard says. "There's really only a handful of studies on this subject out there, so there's room for more awareness."

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Could be your level of vitamin D is low. Known as the “sunshine vitamin” vitamin D is derived not only through diet and supplementation but also through sun exposure. Skin exposed to the sun’s UV rays helps produce vitamin D naturally. However winter sunlight in northern regions like NY does not contain enough UV radiation; during harsh winter months, most people don't produce enough vitamin D naturally. Chronic fatigue, lack of energy, and even feelings of sadness can oftentimes be traced to low levels of vitamin D.

Vitamin D Deficiency Factors
Winter’s lack of strong UV sunlight is not the only cause of low levels of vitamin D. A fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D requires fat for absorption; those with fat malabsorption conditions such as Crohn’s disease, liver disease, cystic fibrosis can be vitamin D deficient. Obesity and poor nutrition can also place a person at risk for vitamin D insufficiencies. Increases in cardiovascular disease, cancer, inflammation, severe asthma in children, and Osteoporosis are associated with vitamin D deficiencies; it is also thought to contribute to a variety of autoimmune diseases.

Benefits of Vitamin D
While it has been known for years that vitamin D helps the bones absorb calcium, aiding bone growth in children and protecting older adults from bone loss, studies have brought to light other important benefits. Proper levels of vitamin D help reduce inflammation and bolster the immune system, and regulate blood pressure. Studies have shown that vitamin D may even help decrease the risk of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Diet & Supplements
Despite bone-chilling weather, it’s still possible to get an adequate daily intake of vitamin D. A daily diet of fortified milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, lean meats, and oily fish such as salmon and tuna can ensure that proper levels are maintained. Vitamin D supplements are also a good source, however it is important to have your levels checked before supplementing. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D test is the most accurate way of assessing Vitamin D in the body. Normal range is above 50 ng/ml (nanograms per milliter) year round for both children and adults. Lower results signify a deficiency; higher values indicate excessive levels which can trigger kidney stones, bone loss, and calcification of the heart and kidneys if left untreated. Discuss your concerns about vitamin D with your health practitioner and ask for the 25-hydroxyvitamin D testing prior to commencing a supplement regimen.

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. These immediate symptoms can be life-threatening; in fact, those with severe food allergies typically carry epinephrine injector pens in case they accidentally eat foods they are allergic to. Highly allergenic foods include peanuts, shellfish, tree nuts, and dairy products.

While immediate reactions typically indicate a food sensitivity, other allergic reactions are not always so obvious. These are called “delayed onset” food allergies as they tend to appear 36-72 hours after eating. These reactions are usually not as severe, but can trigger joint pain, fatigue, brain fog, abdominal bloating, and mood changes. Delayed onset food allergies are also behind baffling long-term health issues like Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and chronic pain. Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis and other severe diseases are also thought to be triggered by delayed food sensitivities.

It’s estimated that 12 million Americans suffer from food allergies and the number is growing for children. A study published in the December 2009 issue of Pediatrics reports the incidence of food allergy in children rose by 18% during 1997-2007. Topping the list of most common allergy triggers are wheat, barley, rye (gluten), dairy products (casein), corn, and soy. However, any food can cause sensitivity if a person’s immune system becomes activated to fight the “foreign invader.”

How Is Food Allergy Testing Done?

Blood tests are done to measure the level of antibodies, or immunoglobulin in the blood. For those suffering from severe, immediate allergic reactions such as asthma or throat swelling, allergen-specific immunoglobulin IgE antibodies testing is performed for certain foods or environmental triggers like pet dander or pollen. To test for delayed onset sensitivities to certain foods, a more involved test would check IgG antibody levels to identify antigens that contribute to chronic diseases. Results from immunoglobulin testing help allergy sufferers and their health practitioners form an effective wellness plan.

Lifestyle Changes

Once the culprit is identified, all necessary precautions must be taken to avoid the allergen food. It is critical to read all ingredient labels before purchasing packaged foods at the market; when dining out, be certain that the foods you order are allergen-free as well as prepared separately from other foods. At dinner parties, bring your own food to ensure there is no cross contamination that can trigger an attack. Most importantly, if you suffer severe allergic reactions, make sure to have all your medications with you at all times.

Lifestyle changes don’t occur overnight. Diligence and careful planning ahead can help reduce allergy anxiety and keep flare ups at bay. Food allergy support groups can offer guidance, friendship and resources to help manage your lifestyle. The news validated what parents and we practitioners who care for children with ASD have known all along: GI disorders are a valid ailment of children on the spectrum and as such require evaluation and treatment.

The consensus recommendations were derived from a 2008 meeting sponsored by Autism Forum and were written by a multidisciplinary panel of pediatric and GI experts. They call for more scientific studies to be conducted on GI disorders in children with autism, acknowledging that GI distress oftentimes present atypical, self injurious behavior and disturbed sleep. The study further recommends that children with ASD who show signs of abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation or other symptoms of gastric distress be evaluated and treated just as their typical counterparts would be. In addition, trials are recommended to build an evidence base for developing diagnostic and treatment strategies for GI disorders.

For many children with autism, communication is an issue; limitations in speech often make it impossible to specifically communicate the pain that they are experiencing, culminating in behavioral issues that are often viewed as the face of autism. Digestive disorders up until now were often dismissed as a symptom of autism and further investigation often was not taken to treat the problem. According to Autism Research Institute’s Director Dr. Steve Edelson, “This is truly a human rights issue; every child deserves proper medical attention--whether or not they have autism.”

In my own ASD patients, I have found that GI distress is a common complaint. Diet is one of the first areas that I evaluate. While the recent report advises that more studies need to be undertaken to develop dietary guidelines, I have found time and time again that specialized diets such as the Gluten-Free, Casein-Free (GFCF) diet have been extremely effective in those who present signs or demonstrate allergies (on blood work) to gluten or dairy products. Feedback from parents regularly shows that children with GI disorders make significant improvements in such areas as speech, bowel habits, language acquisition, behavior and sensory issues when eliminating gluten and dairy foods. In fact, in a trial noted by the panel, more than half the participants elected to continue the GFCF diet after the trial, reporting positive changes in their child. While each child is unique, it’s been my experience that diet in conjunction with other supplementation continually proves to be an effective means of helping children with ASD reach their maximum potential.

For more information, see the January issue of Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Quit smoking? Get more exercise? Eat healthier? Reduce spending? The list goes on and on. If you're like most, you begin the New Year with the best intentions to turn over a new leaf. As time passes, the drive and the ability to stay committed waxes and wanes.

"Failures don't plan to fail; they fail to plan" says author and motivational speaker Harvey MacKay. Help yourself succeed this year by planning to focus on specific areas of your health. If a long-term plan is too overwhelming, try dividing your goals into a weekly or daily plan. Creating a lifestyle wellness plan will not only help your body feel great, but will also provide the mental acuity to make good decisions that will positively affect all areas of your life.

Here are some suggestions to keep your brain and body healthy this year:

Sleep -- While arguably the least taxing, it is often one of the most difficult goals to achieve. Adults should aim for 7-9 hours per night. Insufficient sleep is associated with chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and depression. Make it a priority to establish a good sleep schedule. You’ll find you are sharper mentally and physically when you get adequate quantity of sleep.

Vices -- Plan to quit smoking and excessive drinking. Take it one day at a time.

Diet -- Be committed to a balanced diet; avoid processed foods and high saturated fat foods such as red meat. Opt for chicken, tofu, or even better, fish. A regular diet of Omega 3 rich fish such as salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel or sardines helps raise good high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) which reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease such as abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia), poor circulation to the heart (angina) and heart attack. Essential fatty acids such as Omega 3 can improve brain cell composition as well as the function of chemicals that transmit messages between brain cells and the nervous system. Improper balance or deficiencies in these chemicals, called neurotransmitters, can result in depression, ADHD, anxiety, insomnia, panic attacks, compulsive eating disorders and other compulsive behaviors.

Supplements: Learn the ABC’s of EPA and DHA. These Omega 3 fatty acids in supplement form are particularly beneficial to those who find it difficult to incorporate fish into their diet. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are vital nutrients found naturally in fish and can easily be ingested via gel caps or in liquid form.

As noted previously, these Omega 3 fatty acids have beneficial effects on high blood pressure, heart disease, and chronic inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis. A 2006 Harvard study revealed that 250 mg. of EPA and DHA reduce the risk of dying of heart attack by 36%. (http://pubs.ama-assn.org/media/2006j/1017.dtl) University of Pittsburgh researchers studying rheumatoid arthritis found that 59% of arthritis sufferers stopped taking steroids for pain relief when given 1.2 grams of fish oil daily. (http://www.surgicalneurology-online.com/article/S0090-3019(05)00774-3/abstract)

In terms of brain health, DHA in particular has been found to improve communication between brain cells, helping to improve mood and mental clarity, reduce the risk of stroke, and may possibly stave off Alzheimer’s, and dementia. Research by UCLA neuroscientists has shown that DHA increases the production of LR11, a protein that destroys the protein that forms the "plaques" associated with Alzheimer’s, a disease which is predicted to affect 11 to 15 million people within the next 40 years. Levels of dopamine are increased in the brain when we exercise, which may help combat Parkinson’s disease and chronic compulsive disorders. Exercise also increases endorphins, the body’s natural anxiety busters and mood enhancers, as well as beta activity in the brain which is shown to increase focus and awareness, and reduce brain fog.

Mental Exercise – Research has shown that challenging the brain helps stimulate brain cell connections. Reading, knitting, crossword puzzles, computer activities, or other cognitive activities may delay or even prevent memory loss. This year, stimulate your brain by learning a musical instrument, a foreign language or delve into something you always wanted to learn... like astronomy!

Hydration – Reduced fluid levels, even as little as 1-2%, compromise nerve transmission in the brain, impairing cognitive performance and mood. Short-term memory, attention deficits, mental cloudiness, dizziness, headaches and chronic fatigue are signs of dehydration. Avoid caffeinated drinks. Make an effort to drink 8 large glasses of filtered water daily to flush out toxins and keep your brain and body running like a well-oiled machine.

The human brain can change throughout the course of a lifetime, an amazing ability called neuroplasticity. By activating our brains through new experiences, and fueling our bodies with good nutrition we can create and strengthen neural connections that improve memory and overall cognitive functioning. Thanks to neuroplasticity, it’s never too late to make a positive affect on our brain health.

In coming posts we’ll give you helpful hints on keeping you on track, like recipes for a brain healthy diet, exercise tips, supplement information, and ways to stay mentally sharp. If you are still digging out, here are some things to keep in mind:

Stretch out before venturing outside. Get your blood pumping and joints moving by stretching the arms, back, shoulders and legs. Devoting a few minutes to exercise prepares your body for the vigors of shoveling and helps avoid any muscle pulls.

Wear sturdy boots/shoes with good tread to maximize your footing and help minimize the risk of a fall. If possible, try sprinkling some sand underfoot to provide some extra traction.

Dress properly to avoid hypothermia, a dangerous condition where body temperature drops. Layers are best.

Keep yourself hydrated. Avoid caffeinated drinks.

Use a lightweight, ergonomically-designed, non-stick shovel.

Fresh snow is light snow -- get out and clear your walkway before it compacts on the ground.

When shoveling, try to push the snow to the side, rather than lifting. Stand with your feet apart at hip width to maintain proper balance.

If you must dig and toss the snow, lift with your legs, keeping your back straight; tighten your stomach muscle to avoid straining your back. Avoid twisting your body; rotate your entire body to face the direction you are throwing in.

Start slowly and pace yourself to avoid placing a sudden stress on your heart. Remember that cold air makes it harder to breathe and work, placing more demand on your body.

Know when to call it quits. If you're feeling pain or exhaustion take a break.

If you are elderly, a heavy smoker, have a heart condition or a history of back problems, or lead a sedentary lifestyle, it's best to avoid shoveling altogether. Enlist the help of family members or kind neighbors.

Despite the best intentions to shovel properly, injuries sometimes do occur. Stress from lifting during the winter season can cause lower back strain, muscle spasms, disc damage, and even spinal fractures. If you experience pain, seek help immediately. Your chiropractor can help pinpoint the cause of the pain, relieve the problem, and get you feeling in tip top shape again.

-- Dr. Keri Chiappino & Dr. Brent Reynolds

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Try Wild By Nature, Whole Foods, Trader Joes or similar grocers.

Eat as many foods as you can with Omega 3 fats on the table -- i.e. walnuts and winter squash.

If you have allergies, avoid foods like nightshades vegetables (i.e. potatoes, tomatoes) which may trigger pain flareups.

Good snack choices are nuts! Choose pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, etc. They’re loaded with good fats that are anti-inflammatory.

Limit your intake of sugar which can cause inflammation and joint pain.

Eat a variety of colorful vegetables and fruits which provide plenty of antioxidants. Fill your plate with as many raw, green leafy vegetables as possible.

Be sure to include plenty of fiber rich foods such as sweet potatoes, green beans, or brussel sprouts.

If you choose to drink alcohol, red wine is preferential. Moderation is key of course!

Remember, never eat anything with Trans Fats! Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic conditions have been associated with trans fat consumption. They are found in prepackaged pie crusts, ready-to-bake biscuits & cakes, etc. Read nutritional labels before purchasing any packaged foods. Steer clear of anything containing the words "hydrogenated" or "partially hydrogenated" oils in the ingredients list. Even though a label may list "0 grams of trans fats" these products do in fact contain trans fats; products containing less that .5mg of trans fats per serving are allowed by law to list themselves as trans fat free.

Don’t let small family dramas get you upset. While squalene is naturally found in the body, injection directly into the bloodstream is an unnatural path of entry. The immune system responds to the toxic invasion by developing antibodies that attack naturally-occurring, beneficial squalene located in the nervous system. This is associated with autoimmune disorders, such as those experienced by Persian Gulf War veterans innoculated with squalene-enhanced anthrax vaccines in the 1990s -- ALS, multiple sclerosis, and lupus are but a few.

The onus is on the medical community to disclose all the facts on the H1N1 vaccine, its components, safety and efficacy, before urging mass vaccinations, as well as to advocate safe, non-invasive preventative measures. Basic hygiene such as frequent handwashing, covering mouths when coughing/sneezing, keeping hands clear of virus entry ports: eyes, nose, and mouth, and supplementing with immune-boosting Vitamin D may be the safer path. My advice: do not go blindly for a vaccine this year; do your research – make an informed choice.

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. With Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD,ADD, and other disorders on the rise, do our children need one more assault on their nervous systems?

If a child must have a cell phone, then when shopping for one, you should check the level of radiation that is being absorbed by the head. Naturally it can be difficult getting back on track after a leisurely summer, but for some, specifically those with ADD or AD/HD, transitioning into the structured school routine can be especially challenging. If back to school week was a bit rough, try some of the suggestions below this week to help your child adjust to the demands of the new school year:

Get Enough Shut Eye –
A solid night’s sleep helps your child feel refreshed and alert. Inadequate sleep can make your child frustrated, irritable and may cause him to be unable to keep impulses in check. While each child’s needs differ, generally preschoolers require 11-13 hours of sleep per night; children 5-12 years old need 10-11 hours; preteens-teens 8.5-9.5 hours per night. Establishing a regular sleep schedule by going to bed the same time and waking the same time helps develop a better sleep cycle that will help your child stay attentive and sharp throughout the school day.

Fuel Your Brain and Your Body –
Getting the kids off to school in the am can be very hectic and stressful, however it’s important to start them off with a healthy breakfast – fruit, whole grain cereal, oatmeal, and eggs are some good choices. A healthy diet helps neurotransmitters—our brain’s chemical messengers-- to work efficiently, affecting memory, learning, and behavior. Studies show that kids who eat a balanced breakfast perform better in school.

Keep The Snacks Healthy –
It’s not easy to sell your kids on an apple or low-fat string cheese when they are bombarded daily by slick ads for sugar-laden snacks. TV junk food ads are designed for and directed at our kids. Even purported “healthy” nutrition bars often contain trans fats, high fructose corn syrup and a large percentage of sugar and saturated fat. Become a food detective. Always analyze the labels. Be on guard for the words “partially hydrogenated oils.” Even though the nutritional facts label panel reads “0 grams of trans fats” anything partially hydrogenated indicates that the product does contain trans fats; FDA guidelines permit products containing less that .5mg of trans fats per serving to list on the panel “0 grams of trans fats.” Remember, even small amounts add up. Trans fats raise the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Offer your kids fruit smoothies, nuts, trail mixes, or popcorn. Or, try making your own healthy snacks. Most kids of course will want the snacks that tantalize them at the supermarket or on TV, and an occasional treat is ok, but the more you incorporate these healthy foods and stress the importance of avoiding eating processed foods, the easier it will be over time to help them make the right choices on their own.

Brain Food Exercise
Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and delivers oxygen and nutrients, helping to improve brain function and performance. Children who exercise are less likely to be disruptive – elevated neurotransmitters following a workout help with focus, impulsivity and promote a sense of calm. After school, encourage the kids to get outside and play for a bit, let them burn up some of the pent up energy from sitting at their desks all day – you’ll find it may help improve focus for the day’s homework.

Avoid Electronic Over Stimulation
Kids are barraged with sensory overload from the TV, cell phones, text messaging, I-Pods, handheld electronic games, video game systems, etc. A heavy diet of electronics over stimulates the auditory and visual senses leaving many children unable to concentrate, follow directions and/or complete assignments or tasks at school or at home. Set limits—better yet, put the video games away for a rainy day or the weekend.

Organize Your Child (and Yourself)
Establish a work area and schedule that your child can stick to to finish homework in a timely manner. Parents, prepare lunches and snacks, sign off on papers, etc. the night prior; have your children select their clothes for the next school day; place backpacks, shoes, etc. in one easy access location. You’ll find just a few minutes spent in the evening will help reduce stress levels in the am and make the mad dash to the bus a little less hectic. You’ll rest easy knowing that nothing has been left behind and that your kids are off to school with a clear head, ready to face the challenges of the day.

I hope these tips help make this week and those to follow a bit smoother for your family and wish your child much success in this new school year!

-- Dr. Chiappino

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. The symptoms of BPPV include dizziness or vertigo (spinning), imbalance, nausea, or lightheadedness with movement of the head. Many patients will tell me that they simply rolled over in bed or leaned their heads back and began to experience dizziness. The symptoms can last for a long time or they can come and go in short durations. The most common cause is head trauma, but much of the time there is no known cause.

In BPPV, the dizziness is thought to be due to the collection of debris or calcium carbonate crystals which form a plug in the inner ear canals. The calcium plugs don’t allow for the normal movement of fluid in the inner ear and the result is the sensation of spinning. This can be terrifying to someone to say the least. Imagine spinning around several times and having that feeling 24 hours a day!

The solution for this particular type of vertigo can be very simple and effective. Basically a practitioner places an infrared camera over the patients’ eyes and leans them back with their head off the table. If the person has true BPPV, the eyes will jump back and forth (nystagmus). This test is called the Dix Hallpike test. The procedure to move the calcium out of the canal is called the Epely Maneuver and can be performed right then in the office. Basically, the practitioner brings the patient backwards with their head back and observes their eyes with the camera. The patient is then rolled to one side slowly while the practitioner watches the eyes. When the nystagmus is reduced, they are rolled further, finally to a seated position. The patient then has to be careful to not lean their head back farther than 45 degrees for about 48 hours. This is usually a small price to pay for the benefits of the canal repositioning. Research has shown that the Epley Maneuver/Canal Repositioning is effective in about 80% of people with BPPV (Herdman et al, 1993). Please check out this website that does a great job of explaining the cause and treatments for BPPV: http://www.tchain.com/otoneurology/disorders/bppv/bppv.html

Also, the Vestibular Disorders Association has a list of practitioners around the country who perform canal repositioning maneuvers and is a great resource for those suffering from dizziness/vertigo. www.vestibular.org.

~ Dr. Reynolds

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. You may have noticed there are people who are strongly against an overhaul of our healthcare system. Our healthcare system is full of high tech gadgets, machines that go “bing” and tests, tests, and more tests. There are lifesaving procedures, procedures to clean out arteries, not to mention the huge amount of prescription drugs that are given to reduce cholesterol, manage Diabetes, and the list goes on. Basically, if...sorry, when you get sick...(you’re supposed to get sick you know..it’s “normal.”) When you do, don’t worry, there are the contrivances to save you.

I was recently in the Orlando airport and looking for something to eat. I didn’t have a lot of time, so decided on a healthy smoothie from a place with a sign that said “healthy choices” including salads, fresh fruit, etc. I looked around and there were several places advertising their healthy menus…no lines, yippee! I can remember just a few years ago where airport food was considered 3 rungs below the average menu at a fraternity house. I was pleasantly surprised that airport food has come along way. I couldn’t help but notice that there was hardly anyone at these places. I felt free to shop around and made my smoothie choice after perusing the assortment of salads, wraps, whole wheat turkey paninis, and fresh fruit. I wasn’t starving, but wanted something to tie me over for the 2 hour flight. The one or two employees actually looked eager to help me and provide me with service. They looked down right lonely. We partook in small talk, weather, what a beautiful airport, etc. The lack of activity around the restaurant lulled me into a peacefulness that I almost forgot that I should be getting to my gate for my flight. Did I hear a cricket?

I purchased my Acai, blueberry, almond, banana smoothie and bag of almonds which were both delicious I might add and made my way to my gate. I noticed ahead of me a large gathering of people and noise, and lots of red and yellow colors. Was there an accident? No..it was..McDonalds. It was like coming out of a spa after a massage and walking onto the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. There were 5 registers manned with exhausted looking employees all in matching uniforms reminding me of a military battalion. Each line was 6-8 customers deep, who were staring as if hypnotized by the pictures of awesomeness at the menu above. There was a flurry of activity behind the counter as managers (3) shouted orders while one manned the fry station in place of an employee wrapped up in other business down the aisle. Employees ran around whipping out food on trays and narrowly dodged each other in an effort to shovel the product to the waiting masses. They looked overwhelmed. Did I hear a manager yell “broken arrow!”? No, just my imagination.

At the tables in front children ran around while mothers yelled, cell phones rang, people conversed, laughed. People, people, and more people! This is where the party is! There was a plethora of activity. For a split second I wanted to be apart of this gathering. The red and yellow colors made me feel anxious, like I “needed something.” I thought there might be time for a..quarter pound...no...must...pull...away. Childhood memories came flooding back: The Hamburglar, Ronald, Saturday morning cartoons, birthday parties. Party! I’m in line now. What will I order? Must figure out now! Time is short! Yellow, red...screaming, adrenaline! Then, a thought popped in my head. I was dressed in a gown sitting on a table covered with paper and being told: “I’m sorry, with what you have…the machines can’t help you.” I slowly gathered my strength and extracted myself from the frenzied vortex of sensory stimulation of cooking meat, pictures of perfect burgers, and fries..ah…fries, apple pies...OMG they brought the McRib back!!? The cold smoothie in my hand brought me to consciousness. Pull away...pull away now!

I sipped on my smoothie for strength and tried to counter act the seductive thoughts of naughtier delights by focusing on antioxidants. I’m going to feel good. I stepped out of the line with defiance. “This smoothie is great!” I said loudly so that all around could hear me in an effort to save others. No one heard me. Too late...they were all mesmerized by the MENU. Gone, with no antioxidants in hand, they didn’t have a chance.

I got to my gate in time with a sense of accomplishment and survival. I’m pleased that in 2009, there are places to choose from in an airport. I didn’t have to feel like there was one agency forcing me to eat junk food like in past where choice meant sick, sicker, or “Pepto won’t touch this.” I’m grateful to have a choice. I’m lovin it!

~Dr. Reynolds

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. This is called plasticity. Sort of like heating up a plastic cup and molding it to the shape you want. Who you interact with, how you exercise, what you read, what you think, what you eat, are all factors in molding your brain..and it never stops your entire life. When we’re young, we know that the brain changes very quickly and is very malleable. As we get older, it gets a little more difficult to change because the neural connections for much of the brain function are well connected. Everything we experience, especially how our bodies move molds the actual structure of our brains. A brain that has many diverse connections can function better over all. Whenever we take up an activity like playing the piano, we begin to utilize different areas of the brain and the nerve cells reach out and touch other nerve cells and eventually form pathways for that particular activity. Activity must be consistent for long term changes in the brain to occur. I compare the way the brain changes to walking the same path in your yard on the grass every day. If you walked occasionally, you wouldn’t form much of a path. But if you walked the same path every day, in a year you could have a dirt path…a new “pathway.” This is why when you learn a new activity as a child, it can stay with you and you can sometimes easily resume the activity later in life even after not doing the activity for years. Our brains can change our entire lives. Although it may change slower as a middle-aged person, it still changes none the less. Many of us get stuck in the same routines as we get older and even pride ourselves on “being set in our ways.” Well maybe these bees are showing us that being set in our ways may not be the best way to experience our middle ages. It’s good to take up a new hobby, travel to places you’ve never been, meet new friends, read books on new topics, heck..even take a college class on a subject you once thought difficult. All of activities can improve change your brain for the better.

~Dr. Reynolds

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Recently, the FDA has sent out warnings against the use of Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Excedrin) and other pain medications like Vicodin and Percocet. The cover of Newsday a couple of weeks ago said that the FDA was considering banning Vicodin and other prescription pain relievers. Acetaminophen is one of the most commonly prescribed over the counter medications for pain and fever and the hydrocodone-acetaminophen combination drugs (Vicodin, Percocet) has been the most frequently prescribed drug since 1997. (JAMA 2002, Jan 16; 287 (3) 337-44.) So what's the danger? Well, from 1998 to 2003 acetaminophen was the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States. There were an estimated 56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths related to acetaminophen-associated overdoses per year during the 1990-1998 period. What about all the perhaps thousands of deaths each year from liver disease, kidney failure that might not immediately be linked to these medications? In April 2009, the FDA issued a final regulation that strengthens labeling for over the counter (OTC) products containing acetaminophen, which helps. I understand that a person has to be responsible and use the recommended dosage so as not to risk liver injury or death. I've worked with people with severe chronic pain for years and the danger is that when a person is suffering with chronic pain in the beginning they may think about the recommended dosage, but many times after severe, often debilitating pain, they may ignore these warnings and take an exceeded amount out of desperation. It's easy to take A pill for A headache, but it's much more difficult to "not exceed 4 grams per day" when you're willing to do just about anything not to suffer with severe, chronic pain. My experience with treating patients over the years is that many people are far exceeding the recommended dose and it seems like everyone has been prescribed Vicodin for something. I find it repugnant that often times, people go to the doctor in an effort to reduce their pain and the ONLY solution they are given are these potentially harmful medications. I understand that a doctor wants to help, but the patient should be given options. First, why is there pain? What's causing it? Second, what therapies are available that would help to correct the cause of the pain? Therapies like chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, physical therapy, yoga, and nutrition are excellent choices that are geared towards getting to the cause and thereby eliminating pain symptoms. Pain is a warning signal that something is out of balance. Most medical doctors nowadays recommend these therapies to their patients once a disease process like a tumor, fracture, etc. has been ruled out. Of course sometimes these therapies don't work for every single person and surgery is sometimes needed, but people should at least be given a CHOICE in their pain relief. If you or a family member go to a doctor for pain, ask what alternatives or complementary therapies he/she would recommend instead of potentially harmful medications. If that doctor has negative things to say about alternative therapies, get a second opinion. Please don't settle for a minimal physical examination or no examination followed by a prescription for pain meds. Advocate for yourself, insist on finding out why you have the symptoms you have. Don't settle on JUST symptom relief, find the CAUSE. If you went to an auto mechanic and he covered up your check engine light and said "the light should go off eventually" and did nothing to find out why the light was on in the first place, it would be disconcerting to say the least. Your body is your most precious asset.

~ Dr. Reynolds

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Glad to finally see some sun!! I want to share with you a story that was on CBS news. The link is:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/06/15/earlyshow/health/main5088835.shtml?tag=cbsnewsLeadStoriesArea;cbsnewsLeadStoriesArea.1

The story discusses new research that demonstrates that children who take amphetamine medications have an increased chance of sudden death. Most children who are prescribed such medications are suffering from symptomatology associated with ADHD. There are currently 2.5 million children on these kinds of medications. The doctor giving the report mentioned chiropractic care and dietary changes as alternatives or concurrent treatments. Finally, what so many of you in our practice already know!

Having a child with ADHD can certainly have its challenges, but who would risk sudden death over changing diet and neurological therapy? Obviously, not many of us. Giving medications is a quick fix for some, but the possible side effects are not worth the risk! For me, even ONE child is too much to lose!

So, what can you do? Remember the brain needs two things to reach optimal health; fuel and activation. Fuel is oxygen and nutrition, activation is all the stimulation that our environment give us.

Start with looking at your child's diet. Do they eats fruits and vegetables, are they junk food junkies? Do they only eat certain foods over and over? Eating fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, good fats are all great ideas. Limiting garbage like processed foods, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, lots of refined sugars, white flours, and any food where you can't spell (or pronounce) the ingredients is always a good rule to follow. Experiment with what you give your child and check out specialized diets like the Feingold diet and the Gluten Free/Casein Free diet. Not one diet is good for everyone, but trying one and seeing if there are changes is the best way to know if your child will benefit.

Activation comes from our environment. How much activation does your child get in front of their computer, or on their video games? Not much. This is the season to get outside, go to the parks, bike ride, hiking, swimming, etc.. The LI greenbelt is beginning some family fun hikes all over LI. (go to http://www.ligreenbelt.org/ for more info) The hikes are FREE!!
